There are many issues related to interpreting in settings with some connection to HIV/AIDS. One of the most basic is that in American Sign Language (ASL), the sign POSITIVE, done by signing the + sign, has good connotations. Deaf people and interpreters usually use HAVE HIV rather than HIV POSITIVE to convey the message of someone having the HIV virus. In Quebec, Michel Turgeon developed signs for HIV and AIDS in Langue du Signe Quebecois (LSQ) that aren't based on letters but instead the ideas of inhabiting the body and and then hurting the body. hivdeaf.blogspot.com/2008/04/lsq-signs-for-hiv-aids.html
